What is BitTorrent?
BitTorrent is another form of sharing files but instead of downloading to just a single source, you will be downloading from a number of sources. Those people who are part of the file sharing are able to see the different files that have been downloaded and uploaded. You do not only download in BitTorrent but you also upload them. This makes the information shared a little bit risky and be spied on the other hostile internet users or even hackers because they can throttle your connection.
How to make your connection secure?
A proxy server can help you with your privacy. How? The proxy channels the traffic to another server so your IP address would not be discovered whenever you are using BitTorrent. Those spying on you will only be able to see the IP address from the proxy which would mean you are secured with your activities.
How to set up Internet Access Proxy?
- Register
Sign up for a VPN service so you will be given a unique username and password. To check the efficiency of their service, it is best to try their monthly subscription before going for a whole year subscription. Log in with username and password which has been provided and change the password for security purposes from the client control panel. Make sure the new password would not be associated to any important dates of your life to avoid being hacked. - Create a Proxy Password
For the proxy service, you will fill this up with your credentials before you can generate a password. Simply go to the control panel and click on “Generate Password” which is under the “PPTP/L2TP/SOCKS Password”. Make sure to take note of generated log in credentials as you will need this to log in to the proxy service.
- Organize your BitTorrent client
Set up your BitTorrent client by opening it and going to Options > Preferences > Connection. Look for the “Proxy Server” tab and choose “Socks5” under Type. Enter the following information:
* Proxy Type: Socks5
* Proxy Host: “YOUY HOST GOES IN HERE”
* Proxy Port: 1080
* Username: Your Username
* Password: Your Password
Don’t forget to check all boxes under “Proxy” and “Proxy Privacy” - Test Go to CheckMyTorrentIP.com to know if your proxy service is working. Compare the IP address it detects against the IP address of your torrent client. Test by clicking on the “Generate Torrent” button and open the result in your torrent client. Go to your browsing and hit the refresh button which can be seen under the “Check IP” tab. If it shows a different IP from your browser IP, then the proxy server is working properly.
Here are some of the downsides:
- Using a proxy server can slow down your internet connection, all the more having it encrypted. If you are after for the security of your information, then you should be very patient with your internet connection. Otherwise, you can consider taking the other option of not having it encrypted or not using a proxy server.
- Your download speed will also be affected since you are using another server to run your connection. The more popular the torrents you are using the higher chances of you having a quicker download speed as they offer 3.4mbps while those less know can only offer you 500 to 600 kbps.
- Being anonymous is expensive. It can cost you around $5-7 monthly or around $40 a year. So you really have to consider the different areas that would be affected when you want to have security.
- Take note that not all BitTorrent supports proxy servers. You have to make sure that BitTorrent supports your operating system; otherwise, your proxy servers might not work.
- Using a proxy server will not all together remove the risks of being spied on but it can increase or improve your anonymity. If you do not want to be spied upon in the first place, it is best not to use BitTorrent.
